TRADITIONAL COMPETITIONS SINCE THE 1940s
Viipurin Golf Club founded in 1938 had to, like other Karelians in Vyborg area in 1944 give up its home region. Packed for the move were also the six challenge trophies that golf enthusiasts from Vyborg had donated to the club in 1943.
After many stages Viipurin Golf Club´s activities relocated to Lappeenranta in 1954. The challenge trophies which had been hidden away for over a decade, were brought back out and competitions for them resumed.
The names of the trophies are: Annala Tankard (donated by Väinö Pelkonen), Anski Obstruction (Usko Nousiainen), Jussi’s Cup (Juhani Tapanainen), Kakkola Jug (Harry Buttenhoff), Kiikka Cup (A. Kiikka), and Posse’s Cup (Viljo Nevalainen).
The first competitions for these trophies were held in Vyborg in 1943 and then again in Lappeenranta in 1954. The oldest family championship in Finland still played in the club is Kiikka Cup, with Erik and Gertrud Witting being the first to have their names inscribed on it and after resumed in 1954 in Lappeenranta Tauno and Kari Kotilainen followed.
